What is MRI?
Short for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it is an advanced medical imaging technique that uses strong magnets. The images produced by an MRI scan are far more detailed compared to conventional X-rays. MRI scanning is also a painless and harmless procedure as it does not use any radioactive elements. Patients with metal implants such as pacemakers should always inform the physician as it could interfere with the magnets.
Being non-invasive and safe, an MRI scan is now the preferred imaging method in Malaysia for scanning soft tissue and internal organs such as the brain and heart. While patients do not have to go through any specific preparation for the procedure, an injection of gadolinium is sometimes required to allow better detection of abnormal growths and areas.

The Procedure
Getting an MRI scan is no longer a difficult task. However, patients should be informed about the entire procedure. The MRI scanner is usually cylindrical in shape with a hole in the centre for patients to slide in. Patients will have to remove any metal objects such as bracelets, necklaces and watches.
Typically, the entire procedure will last for around 20-40 minutes. During the scan, patients will normally experience some knocking and loud sounds. This is completely normal as it is how the machine operates. Patients are typically given earplugs or headphones with music on. An intercom is also present so that patients will be able to communicate with the operator at all times.
